Writing with Character was specifically designed to supplement your language arts program and to work within the requirements of your district or state standards.
Each grade level of Writing with Character is set up around the same nine themes, with the idea that each theme can be addressed during the school year for about four weeks. Therefore, each theme offers four lessons and writing activities (one per week). The themes selected are nine universally accepted character trits:
honesty
honor
respect
accountability
excellence
self-control
fairness
caring
civility
Each lesson within the theme focuses on an aspect of that character trait. Students read a short selection that demonstrates the trait and also respond to a writing prompt that allows them to explore the trait further. This means that students have multiple opportunities to read, think, and write about respect, for example. By the time they finish the school year, students will have considered their character and examined the character of others many times--all within the context of language arts skill building.
To decide which composition skills to focus on at each grade leve, we analyzed the leading elementary and middle level language arts textbook series and developed a skills scope and sequence by grade level.
Students love the opportunity to write and talk about their experiences related to the character traits. This program is a great way to engage students in dialogue while teaching strong writing skills related to language arts standards.
