Objectives for the lesson are identified for you, and an introductory approach is suggested. “Teaching the Lesson” suggests discussions and activities that are based on both the character trait being taught and the culture and way of life of the featured young person. You might work on the character trait during one session and the cultural aspect during another session.
The “Review” activities in the lesson plans are always ideas about working the character trait into everyday school life. The “Extension” activities suggest ways of linking the lessons to various curriculum areas. For reading time, consider selecting books from the “Other Stories to Read Aloud” section of the lesson plan. These books were carefully chosen to match lesson ideas. Many are award-winners and should be readily available in your school or local library. Making character education part of your story time is a wonderful way to accomplish infusion without adding any extra subjects to your day. When character education is made a part of daily school life in these ways, research shows that the biggest gains in behavioral change occur.
