Each grade level of Daily Oral Language with Character is set up around the same nine themes, with the thought that each theme can be addressed during a school month, or for 20 school days. Therefore, each theme offers 20 activity pages (one per day). The themes selected are nine universally acceptable character traits:
Honesty
Honor
Respect
Accountability
Excellence
Self-Control
Fairness
Caring
Civility
Each activity page within a theme focuses on an aspect of that character trait. This means students have 20 opportunities to read about, think about, and write about Honesty, for example. By the time they finish the school year, students will have considered their character 180 times--all within the context of language arts skill building.
We analyzed the five leading elementary basal language arts series and developed a skills scope and sequence by grade level.
